There are so many things you find that are required when it comes to publishing that you never even thought of when you started on this long journey – perhaps just as well, or you might have given up right at the beginning! One of the things I hadn’t anticipated was the need for a professionally taken photo. ‘It has to be a professional one,’ I was informed. ‘A snapshot from your camera phone won’t be good enough.’
Why the need? I asked myself. The answer, of course, was that you need a good picture to go on the dust jacket of your book, and also to go on your author website. You have to look GOOD! ‘No-one’s going to buy your book if they look at your picture and conclude you’re a pillock!’ I was told, in no uncertain terms.
So off we went to our local photographer, a man with a good reputation who has taken our special family photos for some years. And to be absolutely fair, Arwel did a pretty good job, taking a wide range of shots of Sarada and myself individually, and also together. For some he wanted us to look serious (author-like!), and for others smiling and relaxed. No problem.
Well, so I thought at the time. Then we got the results – all fine save one. For my ultra serious shot I looked like some sort of enforcer from the Mafia, eyes narrowed, mouth grim, as if I were just about to order someone’s liquidation.
Then a thought occurred to me. I could use this particular picture for promotional purposes, with the caption underneath: “Buy the f*****g book, or else!”
What do you think? Going to buy the book?
